Dave Castro Drops First Hint for 2018 CrossFit Open

With 2017 in the past, we’re now moving towards an exciting new 2018 CrossFit Games season. Dave Castro wasted no time dropping hints for this year’s CrossFit Open Workouts. And in true Castro fashion, can you guess what the hint was?

None other than a photo with a blurred out barbell in the background, and you probably guessed it, a focused image of a set of 50 lb dumbbells. Check out the photo below, along with Castro’s caption, “18.???”

Oh yes, it appears we’re not done seeing dumbbells in Open Workouts anytime soon. How many times we’ll see them this year? We’re still unsure, but it could be noted that the image includes two dumbbells, so the movement will probably be something with a lower body focus, or a form of a thruster, yet those are just our guesses.

In early December, the CrossFit Games announced the full schedule for the 2018 season with the Open beginning in February. If you’re new to the Open, or haven’t seen the official dates for this year, we’ve included the schedule below.

5 Weeks of Workouts

  • 18.1- Feb. 22-26
  • 18.2- March 1-5
  • 18.3- March 8-12
  • 18.4- March 15-19
  • 18.5- March 22-26

Open Workouts are ceremoniously announced on Thursdays at 5 PM PST, and then athletes have four days to submit their workout score by 5 PM PST the following Monday. Athletes must have a qualified coach validate their workout, or submit a workout video per CrossFit’s guidelines for judging.

The Open is the first step and proving grounds for both newer and weathered CrossFit athletes. It grants everyone the opportunity to compete with other athletes across the globe. In addition, it’s the first step to see who will be making it to Regionals, and who will be missing this year’s competitive season.

Last year (and in our mind, without a doubt) dumbbells and heavy snatches were the highlights of the five 2017 Open workouts. We’re excited to see what Castro has up his sleeve as we move closer to this year’s Open season.
