Finding My Fit, Teaching My Kids Life Balance and a Love of Fitness
SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 BY NIKKI STAFFORD
I started CrossFit in the fall of 2011 after my second child turned one. A neighbor and friend tried to convince me to try it and I kept thinking ‘no way will I like it.’ Funny how that changed.
At the time, CrossFit Oak Ridge met down in one of the owner’s basements. I liked it and continued going kind of just for a workout; no goals or anything like that.
A year later, they moved to a newly constructed 12,000 square foot facility in Oak Ridge, NC. They hired in another trainer who pushed us to go beyond our limits and get better. Some new faces joined and they encouraged me to exceed my current abilities. I started wanting to get better and wanting to do things that before I didn’t care about like handstand push-ups.
I love that my kids see me taking fitness seriously and even they know how important it is for me to get to the box. I hope this leads them to a fitness journey of their own…I love the rush of working hard pushing past the limits physically and mentally every day surrounded by amazing people.
Just as things started improving and I could see a difference in my body as well as movements and strength, I found out I was pregnant with my third child. A part of me was a little sad because I thought ‘there is no way I can keep improving pregnant’ and ‘no way I will have time to get back at it after the baby is born.’ But I worked out 6-7 times a week. I scaled a handful of movements when I had to and didn’t reduce strength movements hardly at all.
My son was born April 6th and my last pregnant WOD was April 4th, which consisted of 85 pound thrusters. I took two weeks off and then I had a trainer program me back in. I remember my first really full workout back was MURPH and there was no way I was going to miss it!
CrossFit has changed my life more than just physically. It’s the one workout regimen that works for me that has allowed my body to change and make me proud of it. I love feeling strong and moving weight and doing things I never thought I’d be able to do. It’s also served as my therapy. It’s my happy place. It’s where I go to get my head to stop for a brief moment from a million thoughts rushing through it. Working full time, have 3 kiddos (ages 9, 7, 2) a home to maintain and a workout schedule to consistently hit is not easy but I’m okay with that. CrossFit has blessed my life with amazing people who encourage me, push me and support me.

I can’t imagine my life without my “box family”. I love that my kids see me taking fitness seriously and even they know how important it is for me to get to the box. I hope this leads them to a fitness journey of their own but also to recognize that when you’re an adult with so many responsibilities it’s okay to make time for yourself and the things you enjoy and stay healthy. I’m not a regional athlete and I’m just an okay CrossFitter and my diet continuously needs help — I seriously love donuts — but I love the rush of working hard pushing past the limits physically and mentally every day surrounded by amazing people.
This sport allows me to always strive for something. Work is never done — when one goal is accomplished there’s another one to work on. I cannot say enough things about CrossFit but more than the physical benefits – it saved me and I seriously mean that mentally and emotionally it saved me. I went through and I am still going through the worst part of my life and the thing that keeps me together is this sport! It’s been my lifesaver literally. I don’t think I realized the full impact of the physical change until I saw these photos.
My story will continue for a long time and I’m so excited to see what lies ahead for me. I have bigger goals to conquer and the ride will be hard but ever so exciting!
